How To Renew Your
PR Card In Calgary

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility

To renew your PR card you first have to check if you are eligible

Eligibility requirements:

  • Must be a permanent resident of Canada
  • Must reside in Canada for a minimum of 2 years within the last 5 years of being a permanent resident in Canada
  • Must be physically residing in Canada
  • Must not be under a removal order from Canada
  • Must not be convicted of an offense related to the misuse a permanent resident card
  • Must not be a Canadian citizen

Step 2: Gather Your Documents

On the Canadian governments website there is a document checklist which states all the documents you need for the PR renewal application. Click here to view that checklist.

Step 3: Fill The Application

On the Canadian Government’s website, you can find the PR renewal form.

Step 4: Remaining Steps

Create an account on the IRCC’s website and pay the $50 application fee.

Get two PR size photos (50mm x 70mm) and attach both to the application form. Make sure one of the photos is stamped and dated. You can get your PR card photos from Photo Studio Calgary, the most professional passport photography studio in Calgary.

Step 5: Mail Your Application

After completing all the steps above you should have a completed application with photos attached. You can now mail this application to the PR Card case processing centre.

Common Questions

First, if the PR Card is lost or stolen file a police report with the RCMP or local police. In the report share that your card is lost or stolen.

Then you can fill a new PR card application to obtain another PR card. Make sure you attach a photocopy of your old PR card with this application.

If the PR card is damaged there is no need to file a police report, instead just fill a new PR card application and you will get a valid PR card. Again, remember to attach photocopies of your damaged PR card with this application.

The time it takes to receive your PR card can change and depends on how long it takes to process your application.

As of June 2022 the processing time is 60 days. So within 60 days you should receive your PR Card. However, the processing time can change and depends on how fast the IRCC processes it. For example in previous months, because of COVID, it took 6-7 months to receive a PR Card.

PR Cards are valid for 5 years. But in certain situations a PR Card can only be valid for 1 year. On your PR card it will say how long it is valid till.

If your PR Card gets expired when you’re outside of Canada, you have to apply for PRTD, also known as a travel document. This document can be issued from a local visa office in Chandigarh or New Delhi. Once this document is given to you from the local visa office then you can travel back to Canada with it.
